Christie Gilbert secures Tennis Scholarship to Goldey Beacom
Nelson Bays Tennis star Christie Gilbert has been working towards securing her dream of a College Scholarship in the states to play tennis and has recently signed a contract to attend Goldey Beacom College in Delaware, Wilmington located on the east coast of the United States. Congratulations Christie!
Christie was a late bloomer to the tennis world, starting at age 12 years joining the Richmond Tennis Club with sister Lucy Gilbert. Taking to the sport in leaps she soon realized tennis was a real passion and she continued to blossom as a player.
Representing Nelson Bays has been a regular occurrence for Christie, she has also travelled each weekend to play for Wellington Club for the past 2 years. Travelling out of town to play interclub seen huge improvements to the left handers game.
Goldey Beacom a division 2 college based in Delaware is about a 2.5 hour drive from New York with around 2000 students. Christie is set to leave Nelson for Delaware in August but with the worlds current pandemic she may leave in January 2021.
Goldey Beacom play in the CACC (Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference) they have shown great results winning the championship twice over the recent years. Christie is very excited to meet her new teammates and coach who is also left hander. The team trains at a local club which has 6 indoor courts. Christie will be housed with other athletes who attend the college.
Christie completed her last year at Waimea College working to achieve great grades at school and in her SAT test. This has lead Christie to follow her passion and study business/sport and exercise management at Goldey Beacom.
Christie has been an absolute pleasure to coach over the years and has had a lot of support and knowledge given to her from the wider Nelson region coaches who have helped mould her as a player. Ash, Ngaire, Kolie & John wish her all the very best.
All the best Christie – Love Ash xx
