Together Ashleigh and Ngaire have been coaching for the past 20 years, providing professional tennis development to a variety of ages and abilities. Currently we are offering services at Hope, Nelson Lawns, Wakefield, and Golden Bay Tennis Clubs. Ash, Ngaire & Christie have a great love for the game and enjoy sharing that love with their clients.

Our Team

Ngaire Calder

Ngaire has been coaching since 2002 in the Nelson/Tasman region. Born on the West Coast she spent most of her junior days playing on the West Coast and Canterbury.  She represented the West Coast as both a Junior and Senior, and in the 80’s gained selection for the Central Districts senior team as the number 1 woman. She shifted to Nelson in 1991 where she continued to coach voluntarily. Ngaire was runner-up at the National Regional Sparc volunteer coach of the year award in 2003, after winning the Nelson Regional title.  This award was in recognition of her outstanding voluntary contribution to coaching in tennis, soccer and mini ball. Ngaire sat her TCNZ Assistant Coach Award in 2004 and then sat her Pro Club Coach qualification in 2005. Ngaire has recently semi-retired, but still enjoys coaching around 10 hours a week.

Ashleigh Calder

Ashleigh has been involved in tennis for 20 years. For much of the time, Ash was training hard and competing in various tennis tournaments around the country and overseas. Ash played at National level for 7 years including holding a few junior National titles and has represented Nelson Bays and Canterbury in tennis since she was a young junior, She continues to represent Nelson Bays. In 2013, she took her tennis career to the next level and began coaching in the family business Calder Tennis Training. She completed her Junior Development coaching course with tennis Australia in late 2014.  Working alongside Ngaire and Christie, Ash believes the best thing about being a coach is watching players develop their skills and inspiring others to develop a real love for the sport.

Christie Gilbert

Christie Gilbert joined our team in 2024. She started playing tennis when she was 12 years old, becoming a strong competitive left handed player representing Nelson Bays and travelling to Wellington on her weekends to play for Wellington Club in there top women’s Interclub league. Later on Christie secured a tennis scholarship to play for a college in the states, and then moving on to complete a Bachelor of Sports Coaching, majoring in strength and conditioning with nutrition at Canterbury University.

Christie is currently working through her junior development coaching qualifications with Tennis New Zealand, and due to complete at the end of 2024.

Christie has such great knowledge around all things tennis. She really loves working with children of all ages and brings such enthusiasm to her coaching and our team.
